How It Works
Inside Out Connects makes it easy to build meaningful connections with people who are incarcerated.
There are two ways to get involved:
Write a letter to someone listed on our site, or
Register a family member or friend who is incarcerated so others can connect with them.
Select the option that fits you to learn more.
-
Step 1: Browse Profiles
Explore profiles of individuals who are open to receiving messages. Learn about their interests, background, and what connection means to them.Step 2: Choose Who to Write To
When someone stands out to you, click “Write a Letter” to begin the conversation.Step 3: Write Your First Message
Introduce yourself, share a little about your life, and ask a few friendly questions. Be honest about how often you can write and what kind of connection you’re looking for.Step 4: Send Your Message
Send your message through traditional mail or, if available, through an approved e-messaging service used by the facility (such as Securus, JPay, CorrLinks, or TextBehind).
Follow the facility’s communication rules and include any required information, such as your return address or sender ID.Step 5: Build a Connection
If they reply, continue the conversation at a pace that works for both of you. Your letters can offer encouragement, companionship, and a meaningful human connection. -
Step 1: Create a Profile
Share key information about the person you’re registering, including their name, facility, interests, and a short personal introduction.Step 2: Confirm Consent

We review each profile to help ensure accuracy, clarity, and safety before it’s published.Step 4: Profile Goes Live
Once approved, the profile will appear on our site for others to browse and connect with. You’ll be notified when it’s published.Step 5: Update as Needed
If anything changes - such as facility, preferences, or release date - you can request an update so the profile stays accurate and helpful. -
